Questions

About the
Readability Checker.

What is a good Flesch reading ease score?

For most websites, aim for 60 or higher. That is plain English, comfortable for readers aged 13 to 15. Scores of 70 and above read easily on a phone. Technical or legal pages can score lower, but shorter sentences still help every reader.

How is the grade level calculated?

We use the Flesch Kincaid grade level formula, which looks at average sentence length and average syllables per word. Grade 8 means a typical eighth grader could follow it. Syllables are counted with a rule based method, so expect small differences from other tools.

What makes a sentence hard or very hard?

A sentence of 14 words or more is marked hard when it scores grade 10 or above on its own, or runs past 25 words. It is marked very hard at grade 14 or above, or past 35 words. Splitting it into two sentences usually fixes it.

Is passive voice always wrong?

No. Passive voice is fine when the doer does not matter, such as "the office was renovated in 2024". It becomes a problem when it hides who does what. The checker finds common patterns like "was sent" or "is being reviewed", so treat each highlight as a prompt to look, not a rule.

Does readability affect SEO?

Google does not use a readability score as a ranking factor. Clear writing still helps, because people who understand a page stay longer, trust it more and are more likely to call or buy.

Is my text stored anywhere?

No. The analysis runs entirely in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. Your draft is kept in this browser's local storage so a refresh does not lose it, and Clear removes it.
